Pakka Adavu No.1

Pakka Adavu is one of the fundamental adavus (basic steps) in Bharatanatyam a classical Indian dance form. It is also known as Natta Adavu. Adavus form the building blocks of Bharatanatyam and are important for conveying different movements rhythms and expressions in the dance.

Here is a breakdown of the steps involved in Pakka Adavu:

1. Samapadam: This is the starting position. Stand with your feet together arms relaxed by your sides and the body aligned in an upright position.

2. Teermanam: This is the concluding position. After performing the adavu return to the samapadam position.

3. Stepping: Begin by stepping forward with your right foot. Place the right foot firmly on the floor with the entire sole touching the ground. The weight of the body should be on the right foot.

4. Aramandi: While holding the position with your right foot gently bend your knees to attain the half-sitting position known as aramandi. This will enable you to maintain balance and stability during the adavu.

5. Stamp: Lift your left foot off the floor and bring it forward to meet the right foot. As you bring the left foot down stamp it firmly on the ground beside the right foot. This creates a rhythmic sound.

6. Transfer: Transfer your weight from the right foot to the left foot lifting the right foot off the ground.

7. Extend: Extend your right foot forward keeping it at a slight angle outward. Toes should be pointed and the foot parallel to the ground.

8. Tap: Tap the floor with the toes of your right foot. The tap should be gentle and graceful creating a gentle sound.

9. Return: Bring your right foot back to the starting position beside the left foot. Transfer your weight back to the right foot.

10. Repeat: Repeat the steps by stepping forward with the left foot maintaining the aramandi position stamping with the right foot transferring weight extending the left foot tapping and returning to the starting position.

Pakka Adavu is usually practiced in a linear fashion first and then it can be performed in different patterns and directions as dancers progress in their training. Remember to practice these steps with proper body alignment timing and grace. The rhythm precision and fluidity of the movements are essential in Bharatanatyam. With consistent practice you can master and incorporate Pakka Adavu in your dance repertoire.
