Once upon a time there was a powerful and invincible demon named Mahishasur. He was born as a result of the union between the great demon Rambha and the buffalo demon Jambha. Mahishasur had immense strength and believed that no one not even the mighty gods could defeat him. With his power growing every day Mahishasur became a threat to even the gods of heaven. His ambition led him to conquer the entire universe and establish his rule over it. Afraid of the havoc Mahishasur would wreak the gods decided to address their concerns to Lord Brahma the creator of the universe. Upon hearing their plea Lord Brahma realized that only a goddess of extraordinary strength could slay Mahishasur. So he combined the powers of the Trimurti—the three supreme gods: Brahma Vishnu and Shiva—to create the fiercest and most powerful goddess Devi Durga. Devi Durga was bestowed with multiple arms each wielding a divine weapon gifted by different gods. Her radiance and beauty were unmatched and she possessed unwavering courage and determination to protect the universe from any evil. When Mahishasur learned about Devi Durga’s existence he became intrigued by the stories of her strength and beauty. However his malevolent nature led him to believe that he could easily defeat even the most powerful goddess. Driven by arrogance and overconfidence he mounted an attack on Devi Durga. The battle between Devi Durga and Mahishasur raged for nine days and nights. Mahishasur transformed himself into various ferocious forms trying to overpower Devi Durga but she effortlessly countered each attack. Using her divine weapons she fought valiantly and relentlessly proving her invincibility. On the tenth day known as Vijayadashami or Dussehra Devi Durga finally gained the upper hand. She pierced Mahishasur with her trident and beheaded him bringing an end to his reign of terror. The gods and celestial beings rejoiced and the universe was freed from the clutches of evil. The victory of Devi Durga over Mahishasur is celebrated with tremendous joy and enthusiasm as the festival of Navaratri and Durga Puja. It symbolizes the triumph of good over evil light over darkness and the power of righteousness. Devi Durga’s tale serves as an inspiration to all reminding us to confront the challenges of life with courage determination and unwavering faith in righteousness.
